We were actually born in the same hospital, and that was just the start. He shared so many great memories that he had of his early days here in Bethlehem, PA. He has a fantastic memory for names and dates, and it was a lot of fun for me to hear his stories. Joe Lynn Turner is the dictionary definition of "rock star". I have been a fan of his work since the early 80's, and it was an honor to speak with him. I have great memories of wearing out copies of the albums that he made with Rainbow. It is such incredible music, and it had a huge impact on me. Episode 051 - Steph Paynes

Steph Paynes is the guitar player and founder of Lez Zeppelin. I bought their first album back in 2007, and have been a fan ever since. In my introduction, I make reference to Lez Zeppelin as being a "tribute band". I struggled with that introduction right up until I hit "record" for the interview. To me, they are so far beyond that in terms of attention to detail and overall passion for the music that they are playing, but so much of their press references that label. Looking back, I am glad that I started that way, because it gave Steph a chance to set the record straight and really address her feelings about it. We also talked about her musical influences and the recording process that they use to get that truly authentic sound. Steph and her band mates live every note of the music that they play, and it translates well in their live shows and recorded music. You can learn more about them at http://www.lezzeppelin.com/. Steph told me about her experiences working as a journalist for NME in London, and the benefits of understanding the music business from both sides. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did. Episode 019 - Chad Matheny

I had an opportunity to talk with Chad Matheny as he was preparing to release his latest Emperor X album "Western Teleport". We talked about how happy he is to be working with Bar/None Records, and his preparation for his upcoming tour. Chad has spent a majority of his time as a working musician out on the road. He told me that this tour will take him within 50 miles of anyone that wants to see him, and I am no exception. He will make a stop in my town at the end of October. We talked about his upbringing on the East Coast, and how he left his teaching job to pursue his life in music. Western Teleport is also being made available on vinyl. I told Chad how much I appreciate that. He is also planting Western Teleport Nodes in the cities that he will visit, and he gives his fans clues on where to find. When they are found, they are registered online. This makes unreleased music available to everyone. This is just one example of how Chad makes the experience interactive for his fans. Please visit Chad at http://emperorx.tumblr.com/, and pick up a copy of Western Teleport. Enjoy! (Image courtesy of Six12)

Episode 018 - Arrica Rose

I really enjoyed my recent interview with Arrica Rose. I spent the week leading up to our conversation listening to her new album "Let Alone Sea" and I couldn't wait to talk to her about it. The songs have so many layers, and her incredible voice ties them all together. She concludes the album with a mash up of "Video Killed the Radio Star/Wonderful World". We talked about how lyrics of many pop songs really tell a tragic story, but you really don't notice until you strip away some of the original production. Arrica has a way of choosing just the right song to cover on her albums, and make them her own. We also talked about her background, influences, and the state of the music business. She also told me about the non profit she founded called "I Heart Inc". It is artist operated and raises money for charitable programs and organizations through creative projects and events. Learn more at http://www.iheartinc.com. Please listen to my interview with her, and check out her website http://www.arricarose.com. Please let us know what you think! Mike stays very active and is involved in many projects. He is an inspiration to many musicians, including myself. I told him about my teenage memory of a Saturday morning in a dusty record store buying the Minutemen album "Double Nickels on the Dime" and Husker Du's "Zen Arcade". Mike told me that "Zen Arcade" is what inspired them to make "Double Nickels" a double album. He also shared the meaning of the title. She told me how The Amplifires formed, and talked about her local music scene. She comes from an area that has given us a lot great music through the years. Bands like ABC, Human League, Def Leppard, Arctic Monkeys and Pulp are all local to Sharon. It is nice to see how her band fits into this musical tradition. She told me about their whirlwind tour of the US back in 2009, and how great it felt to have audiences singing her lyrics back to her. We talked about their first album "Fire on the Moon" which came out in 2008, as well as their new single "Fantasy Bride". You can find the new song and much of their earlier work on iTunes. Episode 014 - Jordan White

I recently sat down with singer/songwriter Jordan White. We met up at my favorite restaurant, Bubba's Pot Belly Stove, in Quakertown PA. This is my first interview at a busy place around dinner time, so please pardon some of the background conversations. I personally feel like it adds to the ambience. It is like you are out to dinner with us. Jordan started out by making me jealous in his description of a day in his life (hint..it involves sleeping in). I found that Jordan and I have a lot in common. We traded stories about being inspired by our parents' record collections, and some of his earliest musical influences. He told me about some of his career highlights, as well as the time he spent on American Idol. It was great to hear some behind the scenes stories from that show. Please visit Jordan's website to learn more about him (www.jordanwhitemusic.com). He gave me a cd of some of his music, and it is great! We spent over an hour talking about his music, his career, and his movie roles. Mr. King was kind enough to send me the album before we spoke, and it is incredible. EPISODE 008 - Eric Tessmer Band
-

-
The Eric Tessmer Band is a blues band from Austin, Texas. They started the second leg of their tour right here in Bethlehem, PA. I had the opportunity to watch their sound check, and then sit down with them in the green room for an interview before the show. It was cool! They are very talented, and are building quite a following with each stop of their tour. We talked about life on the road, some of the greats that Eric has shared the stage with, and their upcoming tour stops in India. We also talked about some of their past band experiences, their influences, and the Austin music scene. I read online that you have to see this band live. I can tell you that the rumors are true! The energy is incredible to experience. Words cannot describe Eric's playing. He pays respect to the players that have influenced him, but the style is all his. Danny G's bass playing is tighter than three coats of paint, and Rob beats those drums like they owe him money. Put it all together, and you get the ultimate live experience. If they are anywhere near you on this tour, you have to come out and see for yourself!

EPISODE 007 - Phil Hawk

The Hawk family has made music their business for many years. Phil is a fantastic musician and owner of Hawk Music Center in Bethlehem, PA. His father started the business in 1973, and Phil is carrying on the tradition. I have been going into that store for as long as I can remember. I bought my first guitar and amp there. It was always cool for me to go in when I was first learning and watch Phil play any song by ear. You could not stump him...I know because I tried on more than one occasion. Phil is still very active in the local music scene and Hawk Music continues to inspire the musicians of tomorrow to get started on their musical journey. We had a great after hours conversation in his store. Phil shares many stories that he hasn't talked about in years. He tells about jam sessions in the garage, being in bands with his family, and the many customers who have come through his store over the years. Phil and his family show us that a music store can be a viable business if you are doing it for the right reason. The Hawk family certainly is.
